On Day 4, the students reread the passage with a partner, wrote the author’s purpose in the left margin and asked a question in the right margin. On Day 3, the students read the passage with a partner and found five to seven details to go with each big idea (highlighting them in red and recording the big ideas on their note taking sheet). They highlighted them in yellow and recorded them on their note taking graphic organizer). On Day 2, we choral read the passage and the students found the big ideas related to the main idea. On Day 1, I read the text to my class focusing on finding the main idea (which they wrote at top of the page) and vocabulary (Tier 2 words: confident, opinion, experienced, terrain, attitude)(Tier 3 words: cavalry, cannon, Confederacy). #SHIFTY EYESPY GAME FREE#So, what would that look like? It all started with a question posed as an inquiry to my students: How was our country divided during the Civil War? When considering the first shift: regular practice of complex texts and academic language meant infusing the close reading strategy during my shared reading block with the passage, “Slavery, the Civil War & Reconstruction: Background to the Civil War-Balance Sheet.” (Note: This passage and many others are available from, where you can sign up for a free account.) Each day had a “standards” purpose for rereading the text. #SHIFTY EYESPY GAME SERIES#You are probably thinking, “How could I possibly meet all those standards in a lesson?” It is actually a series of lessons that connect all these standards that takes a week’s time in reading, writing, and social studies. I coupled literacy: RI.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text and W.3.10 Write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. Then I considered the ELA shifts and standards. I looked at social studies to meet the standard SS.3-5.H8 Understand cause and effect relationships and other historical thinking skills in order to interpret events and issues and SS.3-5.G.1 Understand the geographic tools to locate and analyze information about people, places, and environments. So I decided to dig deeper into what each shift meant while applying them to literacy and social studies in my third grade classroom. When I first read these, I thought the avenue to apply them was through social studies and science. Finally, students should be building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction. Next, reading, writing, and speaking are grounded in evidence from texts, both literary and informational. So what are the English Language Arts shifts? The first shift is regular practice with complex texts and their academic language. So what are the major differences in practice that one should expect to see when the Iowa Core Standards in Literacy are being implemented? Those differences in classroom practice, materials, and assessment are described by what are called the shifts.

Beneath Glinda’s tulle outfit is a spine of steel-and a belief that a young woman like Dorothy could grow one and become independent too.ĭelving into the provenance of Glinda’s character reveals a lineage of thinkers who saw the witch as a symbol of female autonomy. Glinda then sends the child to brave the wilds of Oz with nothing more than a canine companion and some flashy footwear. “Well, then, you’ll have to walk,” the Good Witch replies when Dorothy says no. Be gone, before somebody drops a house on you too.” Glinda later asks Dorothy whether she has a broomstick for flying to the Emerald City. When the Wicked Witch threatens her, she responds with a laugh: “Oh, rubbish! You have no power here. She came to consider Glinda her favorite role, though she’d insist on referring to the character as a “good fairy” rather than a “good witch,” thereby distancing herself from the very word that the film sought to redefine for the better.Īs Burke recognized, there’s more to Glinda than her saccharine trappings. But she thought the wise and gracious Glinda was a departure from the (in her words) “skitter-wits” and “spoony ladies with bird-foolish voices” that she was known for playing. To begin with, these things require being as attractive as possible,” she declares in her 1959 autobiography, With Powder on My Nose. “To be a woman, it seems to me, is a responsibility which means giving, understanding, bearing, and loving. In Oz, prettiness and virtue are conflated, and Glinda is the fairest of them all.īillie Burke, the 54-year-old actor who played Glinda, also prized beauty, and some of her opinions on the matter come across as retrograde today. And then there’s the way her character affirms old-fashioned ideas about the value of beauty: “Only bad witches are ugly,” Glinda tells Dorothy upon their meeting. “Of the two Witches, good and bad, can there be anyone who’d choose to spend five minutes with Glinda?” Salman Rushdie once asked in The New Yorker, calling her “a silly pain in the neck.” It’s true that there’s a cartoonish high femininity to Glinda: her butterfly-bedazzled pageant gown, her honeyed singing. It can be easy at first to dismiss the Good Witch as frivolous when compared with her nemesis. In all her rosy-pink goodness, Glinda was literally and figuratively a witch of a different color and an unlikely feminist force. Though there had been two silent-film adaptations of the Oz story before MGM’s The Wizard of Oz came out in August 1939, the typical moviegoer would have been most familiar with screen witches who were creepy old crones or black-frocked fairy-tale monstresses out to get wide-eyed ingenues. She was arguably the first American pop-culture figure to prove that, despite their reputation for diabolical antics, witches could be benevolent beings. Glinda the good witch movie#Still, on the 80th anniversary of the movie that made the Wicked Witch famous, I find myself more drawn to her pastel counterpart, Glinda the Good Witch of the North. I sometimes say it to myself before I go to sleep, like a prayer.” Even when she meets her demise at Dorothy’s hands, she goes down in style, seething: “Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness?” The filmmaker John Waters ( Pink Flamingos, Hairspray) has said, “That line inspired my life. Many fans delight in the Wicked Witch of the West’s deranged cackle and her lust for power and ruby pumps. Whenever I introduce myself as a witch who writes about witches, the conversation often turns to The Wizard of Oz, and when it does, I’m always tempted to focus on the movie’s verdant villain. The experimentally obtained specific charge of the electron is 1.7 into 1011 c/kg. Hence, the specific charge at the electron is determined if the values of E, B and V are known. In this case the direction of magnetic field is perpendicular to the direction of the motion of the charged particle. At this condition charge particle incident at point O at the fluorescent screen, If both magnetic and electric field are applied and their magnitude and direction is adjusted so that the charged particles move without deviation. He created very low pressure inside the discharge tube and applied high voltage. The cathode ray was redirected away from the negatively charged plate and towards the positively charged plate. Thomson used two opposingly charged electric plates around the cathode ray to test the particles' characteristics. Metal electrodes are fitted to the ends of the glass tube, as shown in the figure. Thomson, a scientist, began working with cathode ray tubes in the late 1800s. Medium Solution Verified by Toppr J.J Thomson’s and others conducted an experiment to a vacuum pump. In case of applying magnetic field only, the charge particle deviate and finally incident at 02 as shown in figure. Describe J.J Thomsons experiment on the discovery of cathode rays. When the charge particle moves under the action of electric field strength (E) it moves towards the +ve plate and finally incident at point O, at fluorescent screen. When sufficient amount of potential (V) is applied between the two electrodes electrons emitted from the cathode accelerate with velocity ‘v’ then, It consists of discharge tube in which two electrodes anode (A) and cathode(C) are present P1 and P2 are two parallel electric plates to generate electric field strength (E). Thomson experiment to determine the specific charge of the electron. The experimental setup shown in the figure shows the modern J.J. IN this situation the direction of motion of electron remains perpendicular to both electric and magnetic field. The specific charge of an electron can be determined when electron moves in both magnetic field and electric field which are mutually perpendicular to each other so that the net force on the electron is made zero. But equipping fire departments with a sarcophagus device large enough to smother an EV fire, and the equipment required to deploy it, would be an expensive exercise. Then you could fill the sarcophagus with an inert gas like Argon, or just wait for the oxygen to run out. I guess you might be able to smother a large lithium fire by dropping a Chernobyl style sarcophagus made of steel on top of it, or possibly made of some other material which could handle the heat. There are chemical extinguishers, but my fire station friend didn’t seem to think much of them, at least not for large lithium fires. Fire fighters need to wear respirators if they approach the flame. The fumes from a burning lithium fire are highly toxic, capable of causing death or long term dementia like brain injuries – so you need to keep members of the public at a safe distance. Lithium melts at 180C / 356F, and burns at 2000C / 3632F – almost more than hot enough to melt steel, more than hot enough to destroy most composites and metals like aluminium. So if you try to smother a lithium fire with sand, the sand sinks to the bottom, and the lithium floats on top. Lithium is entirely happy to blaze away while sitting on the surface of a puddle of water. Lithium is so light, it floats on water (lithium density 0.543, half the density of water). The two previous elements, hydrogen and helium, are both gasses. At atomic number 3, it is the first element in the periodic table which is a solid. The problem is, besides being highly flammable, lithium is literally the lightest metal. You cordon off the area, and spray a fine mist of water on the fire to try to keep the temperature down until it finishes burning. He said “Oh you mean like a Tesla or something? The answer is you can’t. A few weeks ago I asked a fire fighter friend how they extinguish electric vehicle battery fires.
